Milwaukee Road Hiawatha Railcar Restoration. Fairfield, Iowa. 2000-

Forty streamlined passenger cars were built by the Milwaukee Road in 1934
for service on their famed transcontinental route between Chicago and Seattle.
Built with WPA funds, the streamlined Hiawatha was one of the first examples of an
all welded lightweight railcar construction. Unveiled at the Century of Progress World's Fair
in Chicago, the Hiawatha became the first train to travel over 100 mph in regular passenger service.

In 2000, ISTS Director Robert Dorgan purchased the last surviving car from this famous train,
and began the lengthy restoration process. When fully restored, the car will once again
travel the rails, housing a mobile design studio, complete with office spaces,
kitchen/dining facilities, living accommodations, and sleeping quarters.
Exhibits and events will be held in our other Milwaukee Road car.
